Jackson Madison County School System has an immediate opening for a Special Education School Nurse Coordinator (RN) to work as assigned in the School District. This position requires active License as an RN for the State of Tennessee in order to be considered a qualified candidate. This position reports directly to the Leader of Special Education. FLSA status is Exempt. Terms of employment is a 200-day calendar subject to renewal at end of term. Pay is based on a district scale and is commensurate with relevant education, experience and certifications.

Position Summary:

The Special Education School Nurse Coordinator (RN), working in a school setting has the role of enhancing the educational process by improving and protecting the health and well-being of students by applying their nursing skills. The RN promotes and implements the standards of school nursing practices established by the profession.

Required Education / Certification / Endorsement:

  • Currently hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee;
  • Minimum Associates Degree in Nursing with 2 years of experience as an RN;
  • Knowledge of growth and development and health problems and/or conditions commonly seen among school age children;
  • Knowledge and experience of the treatment and nursing care of children with special health care needs, such as peg feeding, trach care, catherization, and seizure management;
  • Current CPR certification;
  • Valid driver's license; and
  • Access to reliable transportation on a regular basis.

 Essential Functions:

  • Promote wellness and health education
  • Provide counseling services
  • Train and supervise special education school nurses providing health services
  • Provide emergency care for students and staff
  • Cover for special education nurses when absent
  • Provide illness and injury prevention training
  • Manage chronically ill students' caseload
  • Evaluate children for chronic and acute illnesses and treat or refer as needed
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, such as IEP, 504, IHP
  • Provide education and training to teachers who have chronically ill children in their classroom with conditions that might warrant emergency treatment
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students with contagious infections and illnesses
  • Assist with health screens as indicated by the Coordinated School Health model, refer and follow up assessments as needed
  • Provide home visits, if necessary
  • Provide direct nursing care to students with health needs
  • Enhance parent, community, and teacher relations and interactions related to health
  • Develop individual health care or maintenance plans with client, family, and school
  • Develop the Individual Health Plan (IHP), as mandated by the state of Tennessee for children with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, sickle cell, and cardiac disease
  • Provide classes for students and faculty on health issues as requested
  • Provide training for persons designated by the principal to assist with the administration of medications at school including those medications to be dispensed daily as ordered by the physician and emergency medications such as glucagon and epinephrine
  • Demonstrate competence in carrying out nursing tasks and duties
  • Continue education to keep current in treatment and care of children in the school setting
  • Supervise, train, and oversee LPNs [Tennessee Board of Nursing Administrative Rule 1000-1-04(2)]
  • Perform other responsibilities or duties as deemed necessary by the Leader of Special Education
