Jackson Madison County School System has an immediate opening for an Educational Assistant. The position reports directly to its respective Classroom Teacher and to the School Principal. Pay rate is based on a District Scale, approved by the District School Board and is commensurate with relevant education and experience.

Position Summary:

The Educational Assistant is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in educating and meeting the needs of student(s) while under his or her care.

Required Qualifications:

The State of Tennessee requires this position to be held by a Highly Qualified Paraprofessional. The Highly Qualified Paraprofessional qualification is defined by the State of Tennessee as having met ONE of the following:

  • Completed at least 48 college semester hours. The state equates 48 semester hours (including remedial courses), as the equivalent of two years of college. Developmental courses may count toward the 48. The state DOES NOT require the coursework or Associate Degree be in any specific subject or field, however the nature of the coursework or degree is left to the discretion of the school system. The coursework MUST have been obtained from an accredited institution of higher education;
  • Obtained an Associate Degree or higher;OR
  • Obtained a High School Diploma or GED AND have successfully Passed the Praxis ParaPro Assessment as the statewide test for paraprofessionals.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Arrives and leaves the workplace on time and dresses appropriately for the assigned school setting
  • Types, duplicates and compiles instructional materials
  • Distributes and collects papers, workbooks and other material for instruction
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning
  • May administer, score and record achievement and/or diagnostic material from individual students
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, field trips and other school functions
  • Assists with the supervision of students during arrival dismissal, at buses, on playgrounds, in hallways, and in the lunch room as assigned by the building administrator
  • Assists with the preparation and assimilation of materials for school displays / public relations
  • Assumes responsibility for knowing and following school safety rules and proper procedures for crisis management
  • Adheres to the requirements for confidentiality regarding student information
  • Models mutual respect and appropriate behavior while interacting with student(s)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or building administrator
