Jackson Madison County School System has an immediate opening for a Journeyman - HVAC. This position prefers successful completion of formal high school education or GED. Position is based on year-round employment. Pay is hourly and based on a district scale and is commensurate with relevant education, experience and certifications.

Position Summary: To perform all tasks of the Journeyman - HVAC, and any other task with operating excellence, so full use of the facilities may be made for the benefit of students and staff.

Required Education / Certification / Endorsement:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability
  • Journeyman's Mechanical LicensePreferred, but experience and education will be considered. A Journeyman Mechanical License maybe required at a later date.
  • Each applicant for the Journeyman Mechanical position is preferred to have (4) years actual experience in the mechanical construction industry at the journeyman level. The experience of each applicant is preferred to be directly preceding the date of the application with no break in job experience of more than (6)
  • Meet the health and physical requirements

Essential Functions:

  • Install, service, and repair any type of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment necessary to be used in various buildings by the school department;
  • Assume responsibility for the safe conditions of air conditioning, refrigeration and heating equipment including boilers, circulating pumps and other equipment attached thereto;
  • Work with HVAC lead person to estimate cost of projects in terms of labor and materials;
  • Examine school facilities on a regular basis for the purpose of preventative maintenance;
  • Service and repair all kitchen equipment;
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, including cleanup during and after completion of assigned tasks for safety reasons;
  • Help other trades when necessary to the operation of the school buildings to maintain efficiency and quality;
  • All work is to be done under the supervision of the Lead HVAC or Maintenance Supervisor;
  • Perform any other work-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans;
  • Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working with multiple projects, frequent interruptions, and changing work priorities; working with detailed information/data and maintaining accurate records; maintaining confidentiality; and engaging in communication between persons with diverse positions.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

Mental Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, coordinate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, coordinate, instruct, compute, evaluate, compile and negotiate.
