Jackson Madison County School System has an opening for Principal at the Middle School Level. Candidates interested in this position require a certification from the State of Tennessee - Department of Education to be considered a qualified candidate. The position reports directly to the Superintendent. Pay rate is based on a District Scale, approved by the District School Board and is commensurate with relevant education, experience and certifications.

Position Summary:

The Middle School Principal is responsible managing a school through the use of leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills so as to promote the academic achievement of each student and professional development of the total staff.

Required Education / Certification / Endorsement:

  • Master's Degree in Instructional Leadership and Administration is required by the State of Tennessee;
  • Teacher's certificate with Qualifying Endorsement Area: Instructional Leadership PRe-K-12 (442); Instructional Leadership Professional Pre-K-12 (443);
  • Other Endorsement Codes that aren't currently listed, but are still recognized by the TN Department of Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes and promotes rigorous standards and expectations for all students and staff to facilitate high academic achievement and responsible behavior;
  • Assumes administrative responsibility and instructional leadership for the planning, management, operation, and evaluation of the educational program;
  • Supervises the operation and management of personnel and facilities;
  • Supervises the instructional program of the school;
  • Assumes responsibility for the implementation of the district's aligned and/or state standards for each grade level;
  • Oversees the state and district testing program; leads the school staff in analyzing, understanding, and utilizing data to plan instruction;
  • Maintains a current School Improvement Plan based on annual achievement data;
  • Plans and implements professional development opportunities for all staff members;
  • Works to recommend and retain high-quality staff and provide appropriate supervision that will ensure professional growth;
  • Evaluates teachers and other personnel as outlined in state law, Minimum Rules and Regulations and Board policies;
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining good public relations with the community and using community resources to enrich the learning program;
  • Establishes the annual master schedule for instructional programs and student placement, ensuring appropriate sequential learning experiences;
  • Administers the code of discipline and behavior within the school;
  • Oversees the health and safety of all students;
  • Assumes responsibility for developing school budget, directing all purchasing, and coordinating all financial activities within the school to ensure they are maintained according to the guidelines in the Internal School Uniform Accounting Policy Manual;
  • Requisitions supplies and equipment and all other materials necessary to operate the school through the office of the Superintendent;
  • Assumes the responsibility for planning faculty meetings; parent-teacher conferences, school activities, school exhibits, etc.;
  • Maintains frequent and effective communications with students, families, school staff, and central office administrators;
  • Ensures proper accounting of all equipment, textbooks, an supplies assigned to the school;
  • Administers the athletic program in accordance with the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA);
  • Observes all other rules and regulations relative to the operation of the schools as established by law and as contained in the Rules, Regulations, and Minimum Standards of the State Board of Education;
  • Stays familiar with and ensures appropriates implementation of Board policies;
  • Stays current with yearly Tennessee Academy of School Leaders (TASL) credits;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

  • Expertise in specialty field;
  • Ability to create a classroom environment which is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students;
  • Experience in the instruction of students with varied learning styles and levels of mastery;
  • Experience in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to build positive and meaningful relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff;
  • Demonstrated skill in effective communication, conflict resolution, creativity, problem solving, decision making and time management.
