TITLE: LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)

REPORTS TO: Coordinated School Health Administrator

SUPERVISES: N/A

TERM: 200 Day Calendar, Non-exempt

JOB GOAL: To enhance the educational process by improving and protecting the health and well-being of students by applying their nursing skills. The LPN promotes and implements the standards of school nursing practices established by the profession.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING:

  • Currently hold an active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or higher license in Tennessee
  • Knowledge of growth and development and health problems and/or conditions commonly seen among school age children
  • Knowledge of the treatment and nursing care of children with health care needs
  • Current CPR certification
  • Valid driver's license
  • Access to reliable transportation on a regular basis
  • FBI/TBI Fingerprint/Background Clearance every five (5) years

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent might find appropriate and acceptable


EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's

policy on evaluation of personnel.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide wellness support, health promotion and counseling services to staff and students as beneficial
  • Health Education
  • Emergency care for students and staff
  • Illness and injury prevention
  • Evaluate children for chronic and acute illnesses and treat or refer as needed
  • Provide education and training to teachers who have chronically ill children in their classroom with conditions that might warrant emergency treatment
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students with contagious infections and illnesses
  • Perform health screens as indicated by the Coordinated School Health model, refer and follow up assessments as needed
  • Provide home visits, if necessary
  • Develop the Individual Health Plan (IHP), as mandated by the state of Tennessee for children with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, sickle cell, and cardiac disease
  • Monitor cumulative health records of students including immunizations audits and advises principal and/or parent of deficient records
  • Provides classes for students and faculty on health issues as requested
  • Assists with CPR training to staff designated by the principal
  • Demonstrate competence in carrying out nursing tasks and duties
  • Continued education to keep current in treatment and care of children in the school setting
  • Other responsibilities or duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor
