Jackson Madison County School System has an immediate opening for a Library Media Specialist at the Elementary School Level. Candidates interested in this position require a certification from the State of Tennessee - Department of Education to be considered a qualified candidate.  The position reports directly to its respective School Principal. Pay rate is based on a District Scale, approved by the District School Board and is commensurate with relevant education, experience and certifications.

Position Summary:

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for educating each student under his or her care and for challenging students, parents, other teachers and school staff toward achieving the goals set forth by the Jackson Madison County School System curriculum for this role.


Required Education / Certification / Endorsement:

  • B.A. or B.S. is required by the State of Tennessee;
  • Teacher's certificate with Qualifying Endorsement Area: Library Media Specialist PreK-12;
  • Other Endorsement Codes that aren't currently listed, but are still recognized by the TN Department of Education and allow a teacher to teach this subject


Essential Functions:

  • Maintain an orderly and neat library;
  • Serve as resource for students, teachers, and community members to strengthen student learning;
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers and school administrators to integrate both curricular concepts and information skills that assist research and other learning activities;
  • Provide an environment that allows efficient access to resources, including both print and electronic;
  • Provide parents and community members access to resources, so that the school library information center serves as a community resource;
  • Maintain a collection that adequately supports the curricular priorities within the school;
  • Provide services that adequately support the curricular priority within the school;
  • Provide staff assistance in designing activities that help students learn to identify, analyze, and synthesize information by using a variety of materials and formats;
  • Participate in instructional planning by collaborating with classroom teachers to design, implement and evaluate resource-based teaching units;
  • Provide information literacy skills instruction;
  • Assist students and staff in the use and production of supplementary teaching / learning materials;
  • Explain and assist in the use of reference resources, periodical indexes, computerized search systems;
  • Assemble and display books and other media materials in an organized and visually attractive manner;
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.


Expected Experience, Expertise and Ability:

  • Expertise in specialty field;
  • Ability to create a classroom environment which is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students;
  • Experience in the instruction of students with varied learning styles and levels of mastery;
  • Experience in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to build positive and meaningful relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff;
  • Demonstrated skill in effective communication, conflict resolution, creativity, problem solving, decision making and time management.
